What's Blooming In Spring

Blooming on the patio last night, illuminated by the camera's flash - impatiens, maidenhair fern and nasturtiums.

Made With Heart

Blogging has been sporadic, as we've taken delivery of our Czech glass Christmas beads.

We've been sorting and bagging.

Each one is made by hand, shown below, in the same way for over 100 years.

Yesterday On The Beach

My daughter took me along for a beach walk while she surfed yesterday, in an effort to beat the holiday crowds.

The surf was blown out, but there was plenty of sunshine and the water is warming up.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer here and we'll have nonstop crowds through Labor Day.

After her session, we headed up the stairs for home.

What's Blooming In Spring

The perennials are putting on quite a show this spring.  That's yarrow, above.

And coreopsis and shasta daisies.

Another look at the railroad station here in town where my dad was telegrapher when he mustered out of the Navy at the end of World War II.

On This Day In History

On this day in history, Queen Elizabeth I ordered the arrest of Mary, Queen of Scots, Oscar Wilde was released from prison, Anne Boleyn was beheaded, and Mexico ceded California, Nevada, Utah and parts of 4 other modern day states to the US in the Treaty of Hidalgo.  Born today were Johns Hopkins (pictured above), Ho Chi Minh, Malcolm X, Pol Pot, and Andre the Giant.

Blending In

Waiting patiently under the birdbath yielded nary a bird, so Thomas caught forty winks instead.

Looking Back

Here's one of our local beaches back in 1975 - it seemed crowded then!  Little did we know that would look almost deserted by today's standards.  Summer tourists arrive earlier and earlier every year.

What's Blooming In Spring

California poppies are bending under the weight of morning dew.

The swan river daisies are on the upswing while most of the other daisies that thrived all winter prepare to bow out until autumn.

Up On The Roof

Thomas has always been territorial, but learning he reconnoiters from our rooftop came as a surprise.  A neighbor spotted him in action and captured the evidence with a cell phone in the dark of night.

Spring Day

60 degree water and next to zero waves don't deter my daughter from taking her paddle board for a spin if the sun's out.

On This Day In History

On this day in history, Napoleon I (pictured above) died in exile, the first train robbery in the US was perpetrated, Sitting Bull led his band of Lakota into Canada, and the Netherlands and Denmark were liberated from Nazi occupation.

What's Blooming In Spring

New to my garden this year is a more robust and larger flowered swan river daisy.  It's a perennial, usually treated as an annual.  The hope is that it reseeds profusely for continuous bloom - time will tell.

Riding Along In Our Automobile

Yesterday was a perfect Southern California spring day - sunny with a nice cool breeze.  A great day to drive up the coast for hamburgers.

We parked on the bluff top to admire the view while we ate.

Above, looking south, and below, looking north.  The beaches are empty for now, but by the end of the month, it will be wall to wall people until Labor Day.

After a brief respite, we headed south for home and back to work.
