Oglala Chiefs

In 1891, Red Cloud and American Horse were two of the most important Native American chiefs in the country. They posed for photographer John Gabrill near the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, shaking hands outside a tipi. Red Cloud is in the full length headdress and American Horse is wearing western dress with a holstered pistol.

it's an intriguing pic golden west. hovering on the cusp of dress, tradition, social niceties (did native americans shake hands before europeans arrived?). steven

I love these old photographs and yet it was not so very long ago was it, just a few generations back. How life has changed since then.

I know almost (or is that absolutely?) nothing about native American culture, but it's on my list of things to read about one day when things quieten down a bit. Great photo.
