In A French Village

The year was 1941 and the month of December found photographer Jack Delano traveling the northern Caribbean, documenting island life for the Farm Services Administration. This youngster posed, holding her little brother, with their father's drying fishing nets as a backdrop in their village on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

"French Village", shown below, was a small settlement that was home to a number of French speaking fishermen and their families.

Looks a bit ramshackle, doesn't it... Think of all the families crammed in together. These old photos are very enlightening, Golden West! Happy Day ((HUGS))

golden west there's a book - pages in every doorway, fluttering down every little alleyway - in that photograph of the village. steven
