Maybe it's just me but I don't think that looks like an untroubled or serene face - the baby, yes, the mum, no...she looks pensive to me. Look at her left eyebrow (right as we look at her), it's slightly more knitted than the other and her mouth is not relaxed, it's controlled. Sure she could have been (more than likely was) nervous to be having the portrait taken but I think there's an uneasyness to this picture though, undeniably, it makes for a very breathtaking photograph, and an interesting take on the Madonna and child tradition.
