20th Century Barbershops ~ #14 In A Series

Barbershops weren't just for men during the Great Depression. A woman looking for a bargain could find a barber looking to expand his client base. It appears this particular barber specialized in the "Bob". The picture above was taken in Lancaster, Ohio in August, 1938, by Ben Shahn.

John Vachon took the picture below in February, 1942, in Timber Lake, South Dakota. The United States had joined the Allies in World War II the previous December.

When I think I was alive when both these photos were taken, it makes me realise just how different things were then.
