Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty & Friend

The occasion for this New York City parade was Columbus Day, 1918. World War I, known as The War To End All Wars, was still raging. Its scale was unprecedented, involving 70 million men. A cease fire was declared just a month later, on November 11, and the entire world breathed a collective sigh of relief.

The photograph is courtesy of the Bain News Service collection in the Library of Congress.
