Looking Back

Another look back, courtesy of photographer Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii, to Russia as it was 100 years ago. Above, a peasant girl poses in her finest garments with a bowl of strawberries. And below, Pinkhus Karlinskii at 84 years old, after having devoted 66 years of service as the keeper of the floodgate.

Two absolutely fantastic photographs - two little moments in time. I wonder what happened to the pasant girl in all the awful years following this photograph.

hello golden west - this man's work is truly breath taking isn't it!!! i love both these pictures because they are like the covers of a book - the stories behind these people - the keeper of the flodgate for that long - what did he see? what did he know? what romance, what adventure, wars, astonishing events . . . . . . thankyou for sharing these. steven
