East Meets West

Going back generations, Greeks have lived in Russian Georgia. Above, Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii photographed Greek women and children in Chakva, on the east coast of the Black Sea, harvesting tea. The semi-tropical climate of the area was a boon to the growth of tea plants.

Below, also circa 1910, is master tea grower Lao Zhang Zhou, from China, supervisor of the same Russian tea plantation.
