A Parade From Yesteryear

The famous Parade of Roses took place yesterday in Pasadena - much loved by some, ballyhooed by many, but way slick and too contrived for my taste. Same with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade - the charm of giant balloons of cartoon characters is lost on me. There may have been Native Americans participating, but guaranteed, they weren't sharing a pipe.

These photographs are from 99 years ago and show a 4th of July Parade in New York City. Now we're talking parade! No inane royal waves to the spectators, no candy being throwing at anyone.

Check out the look exchanged between the lady carrying the Italy sign and the gentleman watching from the right, the greenery festooning the reviewing stand.

They don't make parades like they used to...

All photographs are from the Bain Collection in the Library of Congress.
