Cat Nap

Thomas found a cool spot last evening, perfect for a quick snooze before he makes his nightly rounds.

We're in the midst of an ongoing drought and on the verge of mandatory water rationing again.  As we walked through the neighborhood, a wee caterpillar couldn't stay put and made his way slowly across the burning hot macadam in the heat of the day.

We made the acquaintance of a very skinny cat whose collar read "Oliver" when he roused himself from his parched, patchy lawn in pursuit of pets.

What's Blooming In Summer

Penstemons are an ultra-hardy perennial that bloom almost nonstop.  You'll need to cut them back hard every other season, as they tend to get woody.  Cutting back promotes plenty of new growth and lets you give them some shape.

The Hummer Games

We've got a half dozen hummingbirds who spent their days doing battle over their two feeders.  They rarely share, so it was a surprise to see two perched together.

What's Blooming In Summer

The hardiest plants in my garden are those that are self-sown.  This coreopsis is no exception.  One of the blossoms plays host to a wee bug.

The Sky Last Night

Looking west, out the living room window, as the suns sets through kentia palms, giant bamboo and Torrey pines.

Yesterday In The Garden

Two bugs were sharing a coreopsis flower.

A closeup of a common yarrow blossom, and below, a single flower from an almost spent multi-blossomed agapanthus head.

Nothing says summer around here like California peaches from our local fruit stand.

In The Summertime

Thomas sought shade under a patio palm tree on the first day of Summer, photographed by my daughter.

Dusty Old Town

You'd never know from this picture, but the traffic in town is bumper to bumper going both ways for the next three months.

My Dad

My dear dad, at 17, just before he shipped out to the South Seas during World War II.  He's 88 now, was here for breakfast and roundly trounced me at Scrabble.

Waiting Patiently

If Thomas can't spot us through any of the windows when he stops by to visit, he waits on the patio until we show up.

Then he indulges in a bit of Kabuki theater, pretending he's really much too busy to trot right in.

That never lasts terribly long.
